The program consists of an entertaining and educational assembly (approximately 1-hour), followed by hands-on instructional clinics in your P.E. classes for the balance of the day. The first half of the assembly, suitable for all ages, is titled YO-YO FUN and SAFETY. The second segment, suitable for students in grades 3 and up, is the SCIENCE OF spinning. Using multiple demonstrations and class participation, students are introduced to the concepts of gyroscopic stability, rotational inertia, planes of spin, distribution of mass, potential & kinetic energy, levers, friction and simple systems. These concepts tie nicely into educational objectives while the students are studying motion and simple systems & machines.
P.E. teachers will be loaned an instructional video and a class set of yo-yos so that they may continue the unit for one week following the assembly. An interdisciplinary curriculum guide featuring Social Studies (History), Science and Math is also provided to the school for one week free.
The NO FEE option.
School’s obligation is to provide for sales of yo-yos through the PTA or other venue and allow practice during recess periods and/or P.E. classes for a minimum of one week.
Sales: Yo-yos are provided for the P.E. classes. It is not necessary for a student to buy anything. However, yo-yos of the type used in the classes will be made available for purchase for five school days following the program. These fully guaranteed items sell for $6.00 for the standard model and $16.00 for the amazing, ball bearing model. Whoever handles the sales will receive $1.00 for each yo-yo sold. If the school wishes to reduce the price to students they may forego the $1.00 and we will reduce our prices to $5.00 and $15.00
Practice at recess: Yo-yoing are great recess activities. Safety and appropriate use are stressed in both the assembly and the class instructions. When students are given their own “Spinning Zone” to practice, problems are virtually eliminated. Students enjoy building skills and teaching their classmates.
The FEE option. The program is also available without the sales and recess play for the regular price of $695 plus travel expenses or $450 for the assembly only.
